The order matters. Step 1: Contact Airport Security and Lost & Found

Before assuming it is stolen, check with the massive IST Lost and Found office. If you left it on the plane, the airline cleaning crew often hands it directly to the ground staff. If you dropped it in the duty-free zone, airport security usually recovers it quickly.

Call ahead or check the website before travelling: most work by appointment on weekday mornings, and most will ask you to bring the police report, passport photos, proof of citizenship and your onward travel booking, and to pay a fee. An emergency travel document valid for a single journey home can often be issued the same day or the next, while a full replacement passport takes considerably longer.

How Long Will It Take, and Can I Still Fly?

Assume you are rebooking your flight. Even a same-day emergency document depends on the consulate's hours and appointment slots, and you cannot pass through exit immigration without it. Contact your airline early — a documented passport loss is a routine rebooking reason — and tell your travel insurer, since many policies cover replacement costs and the extra hotel nights.
