• The Taxi Meter: The absolute most common issue. Drivers will claim the meter is broken, use a rigged meter, or give you change in useless foreign currency instead of Turkish Lira.
• Card Machines and ATMs: If a terminal or ATM offers to charge you in dollars or euros instead of Turkish lira, always choose lira — the convenient-looking conversion hides a 5–10% markup. Prefer ATMs attached to actual bank branches, and count your change: the 50 TL and 200 TL notes look similar enough to be swapped on purpose.

Which Istanbul Neighborhoods are Safe?

Everywhere tourists actually go — Sultanahmet, Galata and Karaköy, Nişantaşı, Beşiktaş, and Kadıköy or Moda on the Asian side — is busy, well-lit and safe well into the night. Apply standard big-city sense in the side streets off Taksim after midnight, be wary of overly persistent strangers around Aksaray and Laleli, and simply walk the other way if you happen upon a large street demonstration.
