Uncovering the Basilica Cistern: The Sunken Palace

Hidden just beneath the bustling streets and tram lines of Sultanahmet lies one of Istanbul's most astonishing historical marvels: The Basilica Cistern (Yerebatan Sarnıcı). Built in the 6th century during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, this massive subterranean structure was designed to store and provide filtered water for the Great Palace of Constantinople.

Descending into the cistern feels like entering another realm. It is a mesmerizing, damp, and echoing forest of 336 marble columns rising out of the shallow water, reflecting softly in the dim light.

A Spectacular Recent Renovation

If you visited the cistern a decade ago, you must visit it again. The structure recently underwent a massive, multi-year restoration project to protect it against earthquakes. During the restoration, the heavy concrete walkways were replaced with sleek metal grates that bring you much closer to the water level.

More importantly, an entirely new, dynamic lighting system was installed. The lights shift colors and cast dramatic, eerie shadows that make the space feel truly cinematic (it famously featured in the James Bond film From Russia with Love). Contemporary art pieces and sculptures are now also displayed among the ancient columns, adding a modern contrast to the Byzantine architecture.

The Mystery of the Medusa Heads

Walk to the far back left corner of the cistern to find its most famous, and slightly unsettling, attraction. Two massive, ancient Roman Medusa heads are used as column bases. Mysteriously, one is placed sideways and the other upside down. Historians believe they were brought from a pagan temple and placed this way specifically to negate the Gorgon's petrifying gaze in the new Christian empire.
