What to Pack: Lightweight, breathable linen or cotton clothing. Hats and sunglasses are non-negotiable. Warning: Even in summer heat, women must cover their shoulders and knees to enter the Hagia Sophia or Blue Mosque.
Winter (December - March)
What to Expect: Cold, wet, windy, and occasionally snowy. The wind blowing off the Bosphorus strait cuts right to the bone. Snow does fall most winters — usually only a few days a year, but occasionally heavily enough to disrupt flights and traffic.
What to Pack: A heavy winter coat, thermal layers, waterproof boots, and an umbrella.

This applies in every season: shoulders and knees covered for everyone, a headscarf for women, and shoes come off at the door (a pair of slip-ons saves endless lacing). The major mosques lend wraps at the entrance, but having your own scarf and modest layer in your day bag means you never wait in the borrow line.
