Istanbul Weather & Packing Guide: What to Wear by Season

The Myth of the Perpetual Summer

Many tourists assume that because Turkey is in the Middle East, Istanbul must be a hot, dry desert year-round. This is a massive misconception. Istanbul sits right on the edge of Europe and experiences four distinct, highly varied seasons, including freezing snow.

Spring & Autumn (The Transition Seasons)

What to Expect: April/May and September/October are beautiful but highly unpredictable. You can experience a hot, sunny 25°C day and a freezing, rainy 12°C evening on the exact same day.

What to Pack: Layers are mandatory. Bring a light waterproof jacket, comfortable walking shoes (no high heels on the cobblestones!), and a scarf. A scarf is essential for women not just for warmth, but because it is required to enter any mosque.

Summer (June - August)

What to Expect: Brutal heat and extreme humidity. The temperature routinely hits 35°C (95°F), and the concrete of the old city radiates the heat.

What to Pack: Lightweight, breathable linen or cotton clothing. Hats and sunglasses are non-negotiable. Warning: Even in summer heat, women must cover their shoulders and knees to enter the Hagia Sophia or Blue Mosque.

Winter (December - March)

What to Expect: Cold, wet, windy, and occasionally snowy. The wind blowing off the Bosphorus strait cuts right to the bone.

What to Pack: A heavy winter coat, thermal layers, waterproof boots, and an umbrella.

Weather-Proof Your Transport

Walking 15 minutes to a tram station in the freezing January rain, or standing in a 40-minute taxi queue in the sweltering July heat, will instantly ruin your day. Weather-proof your vacation by relying on VIP Chauffeur services. Step directly from the airport terminal into a climate-controlled Mercedes Vito, regardless of the season.
