Unlike a standard museum, the Blue Mosque is a fully functioning place of Islamic worship. It closes to tourists five times a day during prayer times for about 90 minutes. Understanding the rules and etiquette is essential for a smooth visit.

The Strict Dress Code

Because it is a sacred space, a modest dress code is strictly enforced by guards at the entrance:

• Women: Must cover their hair entirely with a scarf. Shoulders, upper arms, and knees must also be covered. Do not wear leggings or tight yoga pants. If your clothing is deemed inappropriate, you will be given a free disposable blue robe and head covering at the entrance.
• Men: Must wear long pants. Tank tops and shorts (even knee-length) are strictly forbidden.
• Shoes: Everyone must remove their shoes before stepping onto the massive red carpet inside. Plastic bags are provided at the door so you can carry your shoes with you during your visit.

When to Visit to Avoid the Crowds

The mosque attracts millions of visitors annually. Do not attempt to visit on Friday mornings or early afternoons; Friday is the Islamic holy day, and the mosque is entirely closed to tourists from morning until the end of the midday prayer (usually around 2:30 PM).

The best time to visit is exactly when it opens for tourists in the morning (usually around 8:30 AM), before the massive tour bus groups arrive.

Transportation Tip: Navigating the Historic Peninsula

The Sultanahmet square and surrounding streets are heavily pedestrianized and mostly closed to regular traffic to protect the historic monuments. Standard yellow taxis often refuse to take passengers into the district due to the intense traffic restrictions.
