If you are on a short layover or a 2-day trip, you might not have the stamina to visit both of Istanbul's massive historical markets. Here is how they compare.

The Grand Bazaar (Kapalıçarşı)

• Size: Massive. You will absolutely get lost, and that is part of the charm.
• Focus: Textiles, carpets, gold, diamonds, leather, and antiques.
• Vibe: Intimidating, highly aggressive sales tactics, extremely crowded, and architecturally stunning.

The Spice Bazaar (Mısır Çarşısı)

• Size: Much smaller. It is essentially one main L-shaped avenue. You will not get lost here.
• Focus: Gastronomy. Saffron, endless varieties of Turkish Delight (Lokum), exotic teas, dried fruits, nuts, and caviar.
• Vibe: Colorful, incredibly aromatic, slightly more relaxed than the Grand Bazaar, and heavily focused on tasting before you buy.

The Verdict

If you want to buy a carpet or experience the overwhelming scale of the Ottoman Empire, go to the Grand Bazaar. If you want to buy edible souvenirs, spices, and high-quality Turkish Delight, go to the Spice Bazaar in Eminönü.

The Logistics

Both bazaars are located in the historic peninsula, an area infamous for catastrophic traffic gridlock. If you are visiting either market, having a dedicated VIP Chauffeured van waiting nearby is essential, as finding an empty taxi in Eminönü or Beyazıt during the afternoon is virtually impossible.
